Update the app to the latest version
On this page
The short answer
Tunvio checks for a new version each time it starts. When one is ready, a small dot appears on “Settings”. Open “Settings” → “About”, tap the status next to the version number, then choose “Update now” (Google Play version) or “Install now” (APK version).
How Tunvio tells you about an update
Tunvio shows no pop-up for a normal update. It shows a dot instead:
- On a phone, the dot sits on the “Settings” tab in the bottom bar.
- On a TV or tablet, it sits on the gear button at the top of the start screen.
- Inside “Settings”, the same dot marks the entry “About”.
The check needs an internet connection. If a version is so old that it is no longer supported, Tunvio instead shows a full-screen notice with the title “Update required” and the text “This version of Tunvio is no longer supported. Please update to keep watching.” It has the same update buttons as below.
Open the update screen
- Open “Settings” and select “About”.
- Under the logo you see the version number and, next to it, a status label: “up to date”, “Update available” or “Not checked yet”. Select the status label, not the version number. The version number opens the changelog.
- The sheet “Version & updates” opens. With an update ready, it shows “Update available” and the new version number.
Update the Google Play version
- In the sheet “Version & updates”, select “Update now”. The Tunvio page on Google Play opens.
- On that page, choose Update. When it is done, open Tunvio again.
Update the APK version
The APK version can download the update itself. If you see the buttons “Install now” and “View on the website”, this is your version.
- Select “Install now”. The sheet “Install update” opens and shows the download size.
- Select “Install now” again. Tunvio downloads the file that fits your device and checks it.
- If Android asks for permission, Tunvio opens a settings page: allow Tunvio to install apps there, then go back to Tunvio.
- Confirm the installation in the system installer. When it is done, open Tunvio again.
Playlists, favorites and progress stay. If you are not on Wi-Fi, the sheet warns you with “You are not on Wi-Fi” and shows how much of your data plan the download uses.
Prefer to do it by hand? “View on the website” opens the APK page. You can also install the current file over the old one.
Check for updates yourself
- Open “Settings” → “About” and select the status label next to the version number.
- Select “Check for updates”.
- Tunvio tells you “You're up to date” or shows the update. The sheet also shows when it last checked.
If the check fails, the sheet says “Couldn't check for updates.” Check the internet connection and try again.
If it does not work
- “Something went wrong.” after “Update now”: the device could not open the link. Open the Google Play app on the device, search for Tunvio and select Update.
- “Version … has been released” with “It usually takes a few days to appear in your store”: the new version is out, but your store does not offer it yet. Wait a few days and check again.
- “This installation comes from the Play Store, so it cannot be replaced by this download. Uninstall Tunvio first, then install the version from the website.”: the Play version and the APK are signed with different keys, so neither can replace the other. Stay with one source. Uninstalling removes your playlists from the device, so save them first with device sync.
- “Without permission to install apps, Tunvio cannot update itself.”: the permission was not given. Select “Install now” again and allow it on the settings page that opens.
- “This device has no settings page for installing apps from other sources. Please install the update from the website.”: use the APK page and install the file with the method from the Android TV guide or the Fire TV guide.
- “The download was interrupted. Check your connection and try again.”: select “Retry”. If the message is “The downloaded file is incomplete or damaged and was discarded.”, try again as well.
- “There is not enough free storage for the download.”: free some space on the device and try again.
- “Sync data comes from a newer app version — please update the app”: another device already runs a newer Tunvio than this one. Update this device first, then sync again.
