Sync playlists and settings between your devices
On this page
The short answer
To use your playlists on another device, set up “Device sync” on the device that has them (“Settings” → “Device sync”). On the new device, choose “Import from another device”. Tunvio can sync through a cloud storage that belongs to you, or directly between the two devices over your home network.
Device sync is optional and does nothing until you set it up. Tunvio runs no sync servers and never sees your data.
Cloud or home network
| Cloud | Home network (“Local”) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you need | An account or a server of your own | Both devices in the same home network, Tunvio open on both |
| Playlists | All of them | Only the playlist you are using right now |
| Passwords | Xtream passwords stay behind; addresses with built-in access travel along | The playlist password travels along, encrypted |
| Other device switched off | Works anyway | Does not work |
What gets synced
Under “What gets synced?” you switch each of these on or off:
- “Playlists”, without account passwords
- “Favorites”, including your own lists
- “Recently watched & resume”: the list and your resume positions
- “Parental controls”: PIN, locked content and age limit
- “Sorting & view”: category order, renames and start entry
- “App settings”: language and playback preferences
Downloaded and recorded files are not part of it.
Over the cloud, the Xtream password stays behind: enter it once on the new device. M3U, direct stream and Stalker playlists carry their access inside the address (the link, or the MAC address), so that address travels with the playlist.
Where the cloud keeps your data
Tunvio shows the storage locations that your device offers, under “Choose storage location”:
- “Google Drive” on Android devices, in a hidden app area of your own Google account. If your TV cannot sign in to a Google account (a Fire TV has no Google services), use one of the other locations or the home network.
- “Own server (WebDAV)”: a Nextcloud, a NAS at home or web space that speaks WebDAV. It works on every device.
- “Microsoft OneDrive”, where your version offers it.
All devices have to use the same account or the same server.
Set up the device that has your playlists (cloud)
- Open “Settings” → “Device sync”. On a phone the setup starts by itself. If it does not, or on a TV or tablet, select “Start setup”.
- Select “Let's go”. In “How should your devices talk?” select “Cloud”, then “Next”.
- In “Where should your data be stored?” pick a location, then “Next”. With only one location, this step is skipped.
- Check the switches under “What gets synced?”, then select “Next”.
- In “Connect”, connect the storage. For Google Drive select “Connect Google account”. For your own server select “Connect your own storage”, fill in “Server address”, “Username” and “Password” and select “Save and connect”.
- In “The first sync”, select “Sync for the first time”, then “Done”.
Nothing is uploaded before step 6. If your storage already holds data from another device, step 6 offers “Import from another device” instead; use it to take that data over. For OneDrive, the screen shows a code and a web address: open the address on your phone or computer and enter the code.
Bring the playlists to the new device (cloud)
- On the new device, open Tunvio. On the welcome screen or on “Playlists”, select “Import from another device”.
- Select “Cloud”, then “Next”. With only one storage location, the card carries its name instead. Pick the same location as before and connect the same account or server.
- Under “What should come over?”, tick the playlists you want. A playlist marked “Already here” is on this device already. “Password needed” means you enter the account password after the transfer.
- Select “Take over”. Settings such as language and playback behavior come along too.
- If a playlist needs its password, select “Enter now”, or “Add later” to do it from the playlist.
- On “Taken over”, leave “Keep these devices in sync” on if you want changes to travel automatically. Select “Done”.
Sync over the home network
On the device that has your playlists:
- Open “Settings” → “Device sync”. If the guided setup opens, select “Skip” on its first screen.
- At the top of the page, select “Local” (next to “Cloud”).
- Switch on “Sync on home network”.
- Select “Pair device”, then “Make this device visible”. Tunvio shows a PIN that is valid for 5 minutes. Keep this screen open.
On the new device:
- On the welcome screen or on “Playlists”, select “Import from another device”, then “Local”, then “Next”.
- Tunvio searches for devices. Select the other device and enter the PIN.
- The app shows “Device paired — first sync started”. The active playlist arrives with its password.
Tunvio must stay open on both devices. If the new device finds nothing, the PIN screen shows an address. Select “Connect by address” on the new device and enter it.
A backup file instead (phone and tablet)
Under “Settings” → “Data & storage” → “Backup”, “Export backup…” saves your playlists, logins, favorites, history and settings as an encrypted file. You choose the password. On the other device, the import screen offers “From a backup file”. A TV does not offer backup files.
After the setup
- Tunvio syncs on its own from now on, for example when the app starts. To sync at once, select “Sync now” under “Settings” → “Device sync”.
- To stop, select “Disconnect”. Your data stays on the device, and the data in your storage is kept.
- On the home network, press and hold a paired device (on a TV, hold OK), or select the three dots next to it, then select “Unpair”.
If it does not work
- “Account connection lost — please reconnect”: connect the account again.
- “Cloud storage refused the sync. Open the account in a browser and check that it has free space and allows changes, then sync again.”: follow that advice.
- “There is nothing in this account yet.” on the new device: the old device has not synced yet. Open “Settings” → “Device sync” there once, then select “Check again”. “Use the home network instead” switches to the other route.
- “Device not reachable — same network and app open on both devices?”: put both devices in the same Wi-Fi network and open Tunvio on both.
- “Wrong PIN”: enter the PIN again. After three wrong tries, the window closes.
- “Pairing window expired — show a new PIN on the other device”: select “Make this device visible” again.
- “Sync data comes from a newer app version — please update the app”: update this device first. See update the app.
